Global Education Derby is a registered charity, established since 1991, aiming to
support teachers, youth workers, and other educators increase awareness, knowledge
and understanding of global issues and how these impact on our lives.
From music and fashion to poverty and terrorism, young people's lives are intimately
connected to the complex and fast-changing world around them. This offers both exciting
opportunities and difficult challenges to those who work with young people both
in and out of school. Education programmes have to reflect the new global realities
if they are to remain relevant, but it isn't always clear to teachers and youth
workers how to do this. We provide much needed support for education practitioners
in both formal education and the youth and community sector.
For schools we run training programmes on a range of
topics, offer customised support for whole school programmes, including help with
gaining accreditations such as the International School Award. For youth and community
workers we provide training, networking opportunities and showcase events. We also
work directly with young people through small projects that demonstrate the effectiveness
of global youth work in reaching disaffected young people and breaking the cycle
of exclusion.
We have a wide range of resources – online and
paper - to help educators with their task. These cover all key stages and curriculum
areas. Materials include issues-based teaching packs, locality packs, environmental
resources and artefact boxes, as well as youth resources for Global Youth Work.
Most of our work is carried out locally in Derby and Derbyshire, with some regional
provision across the East Midlands. Some of our work with helping to develop new
methodologies for global learning (see Open Spaces for Dialogue and Enquiry) has had national
impact.
We are an accredited Development Education Centre, one of a network of similar centres
across the country. If you are not based in the Derby/Derbyshire area then you can
find contact details of your nearest centre on the Think Global website www.think-global.org.uk and click on the Our Network button.
