Derby – India youth exchange 2003

In 2003 Global Education Derby providing support to the Derby City Youth Service’s India youth exchange programme with 23 young people taking part, 12 from India and 11 from Derby. The purpose of this exchange programme is to:

  • Develop greater understanding and awareness of the environment and culture of Indian young people
  • Break down the barriers and bridge the gaps between developed and less developed countries
  • Encourage young people to become active global citizens

Global Education Derby worked with the Youth Service both in Derby and whilst in India to support the young people in their learning and development as global citizens.

For 3 weeks in June and July Derby hosted a group of 12 students from the Punjab region. During their time in England the young people from India had an excellent experience, learning about British culture, visiting historical locations and important industries. Whilst in Derby the group also participated in two Global Education sessions which explored issues of fair trade and poverty.

Young people from Derby spent 3 weeks in India during August. Whilst in India the group from Derby took part in a programme that took in various educational institutes, industries, farming, community and environmental projects. As well as the formal side of the programme, the group got to see some of India’s most famous landmarks such as the Golden Temple, the Taj Mahal and the Himalayas.
