Global youth work
GED has been actively promoting global youth work practice locally, regionally and internationally for the last five years. Global Youth Work is defined as:
“Informal education with young people that encourages a critical understanding of the links between the personal, local and the global and seeks their active participation in actions that bring change towards greater equity and justice” (Development Education Association)
We work closely with the local authority youth services of Derby City and Derbyshire County, voluntary sector organisations,
De Montfort University, and the East Midlands Regional Youth Work Unit in promoting and developing global youth work. We help youth workers develop global youth work practice through the use of our resources library and the provision of training. Twice each year we run a one day training course to introduce youth workers to global youth work
Click here for more information This course is always well attended and each participant receives a global youth work starter pack. Youth groups are also able to visit us to take part in introductory workshops on a range of global issues.
Follow the links below, or on the navigation bar to the side, for further information.
Current projects
We have two new projects just starting that provide lots of opportunities for
youth workers and young people to get involved:
Enabling Effective Support A regional project funded by the Department for
International Development to extend and improve the provision of global youth
work in statutory youth services, the voluntary youth sector, and higher
education institutes across the East Midlands.
Global Bites A programme of short, taster events for young people.
Globalisation too big and confusing? This could be for you - eat the elephant
one mouthful at a time. Find out what's going on in the world from a different
perspective.
Old projects
Details of past project work, including case studies and evaluations, can
also be be found here. They include the Global Youth Action Project which supported a
range of different youth groups take action on global issues that mattered
to them, and international exchange work when we worked with Derby City
Youth Service to deliver two
youth exchanges with the Punjab Youth Service
