PROJECT NEWS ...
May 2022

The Youth Forum has been meeting with around 10 members (from 11 to 20 years old). They have been involved in helping plan a 3-day workshop (for young people only) to be held at Derby Moor School during the Summer half-term (30 May, 31 May & 1 June)*. The workshop will be led by Stephen Martin, the education consultant from London.  The wider community involvement will start after that.

Project website is currently under development and can be viewed via this link: HOME | Mysite (youthwithavision.co.uk)

If you are a young person (10-30 years old) who would like to be involved in this project, please contact:  enquiries@youthwithavision.co.uk

*  If you would like to know more about the 3-day workshop, or book a place, please download the flyer here.

ABOUT THE PROJECT ...

Global Education Derby is pleased to announce that it will be working with project partner Youth With A Vision on a new project called “Other Histories: Education as if Black Lives Matter”.

Supported by the Lottery Heritage Fund, the project provides opportunities for young people from black and minority ethnic communities to investigate the history of their community, and its representation or misrepresentation within the school curriculum.

It aims to involve a wider range of people in exploring heritage, make a contribution towards the current debate on “decolonising the curriculum” and, at the same time, address the educational underachievement of black pupils.

It responds to concerns raised by young people from black and minority ethnic backgrounds who have told us how not  seeing people like themselves reflected in school lessons on science, arts or literature, or seeing single narrative representations of their communities’ past and recent history damaged their sense of confidence in their own worth. They felt this impacted on their motivation to learn and on their academic achievement, and they wanted to do something to address this for present and future cohorts of young people.

The project will work with a group of up to 30 black and minority ethnic young people aged 11–18 years, supported by a volunteer mentor group of BAME young adults.

They will participate in a programme of group sessions during the first stage of which (Connect) they will discuss and share their own experiences and participate in introductory sessions on heritage delivered by the Local Studies Library.

In the second stage (Challenge) they will carry out their own primary research through interviews with other young people, community members, parents, and teachers documenting these in a series of video podcasts that can be used for critical discussion within the group and later edited for incorporation into an education resource pack. They will hear from guest speakers, carry out research tasks and reflect critically on their findings.

In the final stage (Change) they will collaborate with a teacher group and work with creative individuals and agencies to present their research results in ways that can be used with impact within schools in PSHE at KS2 & 3 - including video podcasts elucidating lived experience, and activities to encourage critical reflection on the wider curriculum.

The project has been made possible by the support of the Lottery Heritage Fund and national lottery players across the country.

It is an 18-month project scheduled to start in December 2021.

If you would like to participate in the project, either as a young person, school teacher, or volunteer youth mentor please contact enquiries@youthwithavision.co.uk
