Other Voices: Speaking and listening skills for global citizenship
For a quick, visual outline of the project, please take a look at our short video (download via Dropbox).

Global Education Derby launched a new global citizenship project funded by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation that commenced May 2014. Working with a core group of seven schools we use our expertise in global citizenship to enhance the communication skills and leadership potential of secondary school students. In the long term we believe that the project will support students to develop deeper thinking skills to engage effectively with the world around them.
The project has the development of speaking and listening skills at its core. The idea is to train up a small group of students in each school as global ambassadors. They will receive support to develop their own communication skills through participating in activities focusing on a global theme e.g. human rights. Students have linked up across schools to explore identity and community through drama, sport and practical activities.
In common with other GED projects, Other Voices increases awareness of global citizenship, embeds SMSC across the curriculum and ethos of the school and contributes to community cohesion. It enables teachers to network and share best practice. There will be free CPD for teachers building their confidence to deal with controversial issues through dialogue and raising awareness of global citizenship methodologies and resources.
The students had a fun time at our launch event, with activities lead by Jason Ward (Liverpool World Centre) plus Rob Bowden and Rosie Wilson (Lifeworlds Learning), finding out the many ways they are connected to each other and all the things they share together.
