Yvonne Luce - Education Programme Manager

Yvonne joined GED in 2009 and is responsible for the formal education programme. She has a background in primary education and has also worked in local authorities in a number of roles. Her mission is to help educators understand the benefits of global learning for everyone and apply this knowledge effectively in their settings.
A proactive project coordinator, Yvonne works closely with partner organisations and schools alike to create high quality and enjoyable curriculum based projects and training opportunities. She is responsible for the delivery of our projects, training courses and educational resources.

Rubi Mahmood - Education Coordinator

Rubi joined GED in April 2022 and is responsible for the work in the education programme. She completed her BEd and MA in Education at the University of Derby and has a background in primary education. Rubi has worked both in the UK and in the Middle East in a number of roles as a teacher, consultant and advisor.
Working closely with partner organisations and schools to create curriculum-based projects and develop training, Rubi is responsible for the delivery of our projects, training courses and educational resources.

David Taylor - Finance and Funding Manager

David joined the organisation back in 1994, after returning from Eswatini, where he had spent ten years as a development worker with Skillshare International working on farming and water supply projects. A bit of a generalist with a degree in Economics and Political Theory, his main responsibility is now the financial side of things - preparing funding applications to bring money in, and making sure it is spent appropriately.

Lisa Sabey - Administrator

With a secretarial background, Lisa joined GED in 2006 and handles day-to-day enquiries, membership, resources, project administration and takes the lead on publications, such as newsletters, etc. She often helps Yvonne to run project events and workshops, including online delivery of CPD. Lisa is a very organised person who helps to make the office run smoothly and is also our resident money saving expert!

Matthew Parry: Matthew became a Trustee of GED in 2018. He is currently a Senior Lecturer on the teacher training programmes at the University of Derby, with an emphasis on Computing, Mathematics, Science and SEND.
Before entering the teaching profession, Matthew had a 15-year career in the IT industry, working at all levels including directorial. After retraining as a teacher, he has taught in various primary schools and in a special school for students with behavioural and emotional difficulties. He is a Computer At School (CAS) Master Teacher, a Raspberry Pi Certified educator, a Barefoot ambassador and a National Computer Centre for Education (NCCE) facilitator.
Matthew believes that the ethos of Global Education Derby - to develop ‘learning for a better world’ via the support, resources and workshops that are offered, is something that needs to be heard by not just the children but the teachers in our schools too.
Matthew took on the role of Chair at the 2020 AGM and was re-elected in 2021.
Afzahl Fatimah-Razak: Fatimah joined the Board of Trustees in 2011 and was elected as Treasurer. She has previously been involved in GED project work as part of the Multi Faith Centre Youth Group and has also held the position of Chair at GED, before stepping down to concentrate on other volunteer work.
Fatimah re-joined the Board in 2016 and, as a qualified accountant; she enjoys working with organizations to help them to grow.
Fatimah has stated that she is happy to continue in her role as Treasurer and was elected to the role again at the 2021 meeting.
Rob Butler: Until December 2017, Rob was the Deputy Head of a 11-19 special school in Nottinghamshire. Global Education Derby worked with staff at his school during his last academic year there and Rob was impressed by the individuals from GED that he met, and the activities provided (including the “amazing mailing list”). Learners from Rob's school were invited to take part in a celebration event for the Other Voices project at Pride Park stadium.
Rob is an experienced teacher of science (over 25 years) and now Rob is field officer for the Midlands region of the Association for Science Education and delivers CPD for STEM learning & the Science Learning Partnerships.
Rob joined the Board of Trustees at the AGM in October 2017 and wants to support GED in any way he can.
Stuart Banks: Stuart returned to the UK from Africa a few years ago and was keen to get involved in areas where he believes he can make a contribution. He joined the Board of Trustees in 2018.
Stuart has considerable experience of charity/development sector both in UK and Africa, as well as experience of Accounting, Administration and Governance issues.
Dr Ranjit Verma: Ranjit is an experienced volunteer who considers it a privilege to serve the community. He is a medical doctor and a former consultant anaesthetist at Royal Derby Hospital and has huge experience of committee work and has previously been academically involved with many organisations as well as the magistracy and governorship of the Derby High School.
Ranjit has experience of fundraising and project work, both local and internationally and believes that his skill set could assist in strategic planning, implementation and support to help GED achieve its goals.
Ranjit has been a Trustee since 2016.
Connie Lau Man Yuen: Connie joined the Board of Trustees at the 2020 AGM.
She has great enthusiasm to support young people’s development. Connie states that she is committed to serve wherever she stays and lives!
Connie has worked as an English teacher, part-time lecturer and researcher for the past 16 years. She was awarded PhD with a special interest in learning English as a second language as well as learning content subject thorough a second language. Her research experience covers a wide variety of topics across teaching and learning.
She has experience of managing a number of projects to improve teaching and learning, student development, as well as supporting pre/in-service teachers for English language teaching.
Connie is involved in volunteer work for Department of Education Studies Alumni and The Hong Kong Women's Choir. The Choir aims to raise funds to help the under-privileged groups and sing to serve in elderly homes and hospitals.
Nick Gee: Nick joined the Board of Trustees at the 2020 AGM.
He is Associate Professor (Accessibility and Inclusivity) in the Faculty of Health, Education and Life Sciences at Birmingham City University, UK. He is also founder member and Chair of the international Disability in Professional Practice Special Interest Group (DiPPSIG), and Executive Board Member and Chair Elect of the European Association of Practitioner Research on Improving Learning (EAPRIL). Nick completed his term of office as Trustee of the Elizabeth Bryan Foundation Trust, prior to joining the GED Board of Trustees.
Nick has undertaken commissioned work on the subject of accessibility and inclusive practice for many organisations in the education, charitable and not for profit sectors as well as for several blue chip companies and has received commendations from several regulatory bodies for his work in inclusive curriculum design.
Presenting his work world-wide, and undertaking consultancy as ‘The Inclusivity Man’ Nick has many connections in the field of inclusivity. He is one of the inaugural members of the International Association of Accessibility Professionals and is Fellow of both the Higher Education Academy and the Royal Society of Public Health.
Nick is a Paediatric Nurse by background, specialising in respite and palliative care and has a burning passion for enhancing health and educational outcomes for young people both at home and internationally.
Melanie Welaratne: Melanie joined the GED membership in December 2020, was co-opted onto the Board early in 2021 and became a Trustee at the AGM in 2021.
Melanie is committed to challenging inequalities and is currently completing an MA in development education and global learning with a focus on decolonial education, part time and online. She is also invested in developing anti-racist education and thinking within communities and organisations. Her growing knowledge and global upbringing makes her a passionate advocate, developer and researcher in key issues surrounding equity within education in a creative way.
Melanie has experience in both Higher and Further education, currently working as an Educational Developer at Nottingham Trent University. She previously worked at both the University of Derby and Derby College in student facing roles that championed student voice.
Melanie grew up and lived in 7 countries, experiencing a global and varied education. Her experiences and learning from a young age have enabled her to understand and engage in the development of global education, diving deeper into coloniality, social justice and human rights.
